East River Pipe, "MEL"
Merge, released: 1996
Try to get this band out of your head. It is very hard to do. Two great things I noticed about "Mel": 12 songs, 36 minutes. I know you can get some 70 minutes of sound on a CD but why do so many bands feel so compelled to fill 'er up with crap or what ever else thats lying about. This guy, FM, writes 'em, records them at home on 8-track reel-to-reel, and then out they come all contained on an album of rock/pop classics. No filler on this record. There is nothing really earth shattering on this disc, short concise pop songs of keyboard, electric (I think) drums, guitars and vocals. The lyrics are simple and to the point. He tells some very interestine stories with a minimum of lines about love and life. At some point there is a sameness to the songs. The tempo doesn't vary and it gets a bit reptitive sounding, but that would be my only complaint.
