Bailter Space, "Tanker/Nelsh"
Matador records, released: 1996
Matador's reissue of Bailter Spaces' first EP and album from the late 1980's provides a great opportunity to hear the development of the Bailter Space sound. Because of this, it seems unusual that Nelsh, Bailter Spaces' first album follows Tanker, particularly in view of the increased stylistic focus found on Tanker. Those more familiar with later albums such as "Wammo" may be surprised to hear some very traditional pop songs thrown in, particularly on Nelsh which sounds heavily influenced by The Fall. For those who wish to take a further step back in the history of Bailter Space, look for releases of "The Gordons" on Flying Nun records. All in all, Tanker/Nelsh is full of great songs and is well worth checking out.
